  1. “Night Catches Us”

The thoughts I got from reading the article is that this film is about the past of power and how secrets comeback and hunts the past, present and the future. ““Night Catches Us,” as its title hints, focuses on the almost unbearable weight of the past and the power it can have to overshadow and suffocate the present with the taint of secrets inside of secrets, wheels inside of wheels”. Marcus comes back to town for his father’s funeral and the people in the community haven’t heard from him in years. Marcus has a reputation as being a snitch so it’s hard for him to get love from the people. Many people see him as a dangerous individual and they believe he can hurt the movement of the black panthers. So I feel that the film is to get people attention on when people switch sides and people turn against each other. In a black community being a snitch can get you killed and it can hurt your family. So it’s all about respect.

Quotes: “Night Catches Us,” as its title hints, focuses on the almost unbearable weight of the past and the power it can have to overshadow and suffocate the present with the taint of secrets inside of secrets, wheels inside of wheels”.
“No one has heard from Marcus for years, and few people are happy to see him return. His Muslim minister brother drips contempt, and Dwayne “DoRight” Miller (Hector), the man who now heads what’s left of the Panthers, tells him no one has forgotten what he did in the past — actions, gradually explained, that cause the word “snitch” to get thrown around”.
“When we first meet Marcus Washington, we don’t know what his secrets are, but we can sense he has them”.

Questions: What pushed Marcus away from his hometown?
What reaction was the writer trying to get from the audience?
Did Marcus have a huge impact on the Black Power Movement?

  2. The film “Night Catches Us” setting is and Philadelphia around the time of 1976. It discusses personal stories on the declining years on the black power movement and it also discusses the legacy of the political movement. In order for this movie to be mad e Hamilton had to push for decade in order for the movie to get out.” Night Catches Us” both capitalizes on a neglected time frame and demonstrates how few opportunities stars of color have to show us everything they can do”( write up). This shows us how minority really do not get the same opportunity as others. In this movie majority of the actor/ actresses are black and they say that the cast enrich the films personal theme. “Night Catches Us” like the tittle said focus on how the past and its power that it can have to catch up with you and contaminates you future.

    Quotes
“Night Catches Us” is produced through SimonSays Entertainment, a new company whose motto is “Tell every story.” Hamilton’s narrative is a perfect example of the kind of story that has not been told before, and we are all the richer for having experienced it. (Night Catches Us)
“As conceived of by Hamilton, who is originally from Jamaica and had to push for nearly a decade to get this film made, “Night Catches Us” both capitalizes on a neglected time frame and demonstrates how few opportunities stars of color have to show us everything they can do”. (Night Catches Us)
“These actors and the rest of the almost exclusively African American cast (including “The Wire” veterans Jamie Hector and Wendell Pierce) enrich the film’s personal theme”. (Night Catches Us)
    Questions
What pushed Marcus stray away from his hometown?
how deep did this movie get on the black power movement?
Which is the bigger concern the black power movement or political movement

    Reaction:
I thought this movie is unique for the time period that is set in and takes a look a the negative affects the revolutionary vibe that had settled in the 70’s. As Kenneth Turan mentioned in his article, many forget about this time period and I think many forget its importance on how it helped shaped today. I think this movie can parallel with the present, but also is significant because it shows the radicalness of the 70’s and the many movements, such as the Panthers, and what they represented. Also, this movie shows the deep and intricacy of relationships and the effects of radical movements seem to have on those relationships. I think it also represents how the past affects the present and future, which is just unique to that time period, but a universal message, that seems to be lost in time.
    Questions:
    1. In general, for African Americans, why is it that present day society holds the path against a whole race, so that they can’t thrive in the present, as suggested from the movie?
    2. Why do many present day films not look at the 70’s and the radical movements taken place?
    3. How does this time frame in the movie parallel with the present?
    4. Night Catches Us looks at the past and how it defines the present, why is it important for as a society that we can’t let the past define the present, but we can’t let it help shape for a better future?
    Quotes:
“But, frankly, well-written dramas that allow African American actors this kind of richness of character development, the ability to play a full and complex spectrum of emotions, are rare indeed and especially welcome.”–Kenneth Turan
“Night Catches Us” both capitalizes on a neglected time frame and demonstrates how few opportunities stars of color have to show us everything they can do.”-Kenneth Turan
““Night Catches Us,” as its title hints, focuses on the almost unbearable weight of the past and the power it can have to overshadow and suffocate the present with the taint of secrets inside of secrets, wheels inside of wheels” –Kenneth Turan
“The performances are deepened by being fixed in locations that Hamilton clearly knows well. Even when its story falters, Night Catches Us conjures a world that feels fully real.”

    Night Catches Us

When I first started reading the articles of “Night Catches Us” I could tell that this was going to be about African American revolution or something in that neighborhood. This story tells about a guy who returns home from prison into his old neighborhood. The main guy, Marcus, is know to be a snitch and got his revolutionary friend killed. In the article it talks about the struggle that Marcus goes through while returning to his neighborhood. He has a mother and her daughter who welcomes him with open arms, while everyone else is displeased by his return home. In most low economic and poor communities where there are gangs and violence, being known as a snitch can get you killed. T think the title of this movie plays a big role in what the movie would be about. I think that the title “Night Catches Us” is giving us a hint at the things we do in the dark are eventually going to be revealed and come into the light. I think that Marcus is going to have a hard time defending himself against all the people that are against him because he only really has two people by his side. The author of this movie seems to be creative in how this movie was made.

    Quotes:
    1. “No one has heard from Marcus for years, and few people are happy to see him return. His Muslim minister brother drips contempt, and Dwayne “DoRight” Miller (Hector), the man who now heads what’s left of the Panthers, tells him no one has forgotten what he did in the past — actions, gradually explained, that cause the word “snitch” to get thrown around.” (Night Catches Us)
    2. “Also, Marcus was a cohort of Neil, Patricia’s late husband and Iris’ father. An alleged murderer, Neil was gunned down by police, and is that Marcus was the one who told the cops where to find him. The black Cadillac that Marcus just inherited from his father is soon emblazoned with the word “snitch.”” (Night Catches Us”
    3. “Set in a particular time and place, Philadelphia in 1976, “Night Catches Us” places a gripping personal story against the backdrop of the declining years of the Black Power movement” (Night Catches Us)

    Questions:
    1. In this movie, how does Marcus realize that the Black Panthers are against him?
    2. Does him living in the slums of Philadelphia play a big role in why he did what he did and what was his motive in snitching?
    3. As him being a Black Panther member, do you think he should have talked to his leader before taking his actions?
    4. What where the Black Panthers all about at this time in history?
    5. Is Black Power shown throughout the whole movie?
